San Diego Wave Secures 2-0 Win Over Angel City

After the match, Head Coach Freya Coombe acknowledged the team's improved defensive structure but noted that they need to do more in both boxes to see out games. "We need to make sure we're not allowing chances in those game-changing moments," Coombe said.

Angel City FC fell to the San Diego Wave 0-2 with goals from forwards Sofia Jakobsson and Makenzy Doniak. Despite a strong performance from Angel City, they were unable to break down San Diego's defense.

After the match, Head Coach Freya Coombe acknowledged the team's improved defensive structure but noted that they need to do more in both boxes to see out games. "We need to make sure we're not allowing chances in those game-changing moments," Coombe said.

Angel City had their best chance of the night in the 51st minute after a shot by forward Claire Emslie was blocked by defender Christen Westphal and fell to defender M.A. Vignola, who fired off a low, angled shot that beat multiple defenders but went inches wide of the far post.

The match also marked the first appearance and start for star midfielder Julie Ertz, who signed with the club earlier in the week. Coombe praised Ertz's calm presence on the ball, which translated to the rest of the team. "She looked calm under pressure, which translated to the rest of the team. They were a lot calmer on the ball. Even when pressed, she was able to deal with pressure really well and just calmly play out of it. Having her leadership in the center of the park is huge."

Despite the loss, Angel City can take some positives from the match as they look ahead to their next game on the road against Portland on April 29th at 7:30 pm.
