The Washington Capitals defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets in a 4-3 overtime thriller at Nationwide Arena on Tuesday. The game-winning goal was scored by Evgeny Kuznetsov just 26 seconds into overtime, with a wrist shot from the right face-off circle after a drop pass from Marcus Johansson. Kuznetsov expressed his excitement over the win, saying "every time you win the face-off in overtime it's a big possession."

Johnny Gaudreau tied the game for Columbus at the 12:44 mark of the third period, scoring his 14th goal of the season with a wrist shot after a long outlet by Gavin Bayreuther. Despite giving up the late goal, Kuznetsov remained confident in his team and expressed his delight at securing the win in overtime.

Trevor van Riemsdyk scored two goals and Charlie Lindgren made 31 saves for the Capitals, who ended a three-game road losing streak and head into their break on a positive note. The Blue Jackets, who are on a three-game losing streak, were led by Joonas Korpisalo who made 30 saves.

Although the game was a solid effort by Columbus, their coach Brad Larsen stated that there were a few mistakes that cost them in the end. The Blue Jackets will have to wait until Feb. 10 to get back in action against the Toronto Maple Leafs, while the Capitals will play the Boston Bruins on Feb. 11.
